#  Eric Jacobsen receives 2024 Willard Gibbs Medal

 Eric Jacobsen, the Sheldon Emory Professor of Organic Chemistry, will receive the 2024 Willard Gibbs Medal. This medal is one of the most prestigious honors in chemistry, awarded by the Chicago Section of the ACS.

 The medal seeks "to publicly recognize eminent chemists who, through years of application and devotion, have brought to the world developments that enable everyone to live more comfortably and to understand this world better." Medalists are selected annually by a national jury of chemists from across disciplines, and the nominee must be a chemist who is deemed worthy of special recognition.

 Jacobsen's "research program has been dedicated to the discovery of catalytic systems that control stereochemical outcomes in organic reactions of interest." His group has been able "to perform deep mechanistic analyses of the catalysts \[his group\] have discovered."

 In his award lecture "Selectivity and Generality in Small-Molecule Catalysis," Jacobsen will "relate different stories where seemingly minor 'misbehaviors' in \[their\] experimental data were examined closely and found to reveal unexpected insights into the catalytic mechanisms and ultimately led \[them\] to improved or entirely new catalytic systems."

 The citation for Jacobsen's award is below:

 *For discoveries of fundamentally important catalytic reactions which have led to:*  
*• the redefining of the way molecules are synthesized*  
*• the uncovering of effective methods for a wide variety of stereoselective reactions*  
*• the development of chiral Schiff base complexes of main group and transition metals*  
*• the discovery and application of novel organic catalysts*
