 The Harvard Gazette featured recent research from Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology **Eugene Shakhnovich** and **Amy Gilson**, a graduate student in his lab. In their paper, "[The role of evolutionary selection in the dynamics of protein structure evolution](https://faculty.chemistry.harvard.edu/shakhnovich/publications/role-evolutionary-selection-dynamics-protein-structure-evolution)," first author Gilson and collaborators "outline biophysical and evolutionary rationale for broad variation in protein family sizes, prevalence of compact structures among ancient proteins, and more rapid structure evolution of proteins with lower packing density."
