#  Prof. Friend to direct Rowland Institute

On July 1, Professor Cynthia Friend becomes the director of Harvard's interdisciplinary [Rowland Institute](http://www2.rowland.harvard.edu/home), augmenting her duties here in CCB. She has served as Associate Director of the Harvard Materials Science and Engineering Center, Associate Dean in the FAS, and CCB department Chair. "I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as the new Director of the Rowland Institute. The Institute provides a unique opportunity for young scientists to perform independent, high-risk research. The emphasis on experimental science is unique, inspired by the vision of our founder, Edwin Land, who believed in the value of exploration and invention through hands-on research," writes Prof. Friend.
