DESCRIPTION:
Professor Yi Cui, Stanford University. "Crossing Nanoscience and Electrochemistry: Battery and Electrocatalyst." Woodward CCB Departmental ColloquiumAbstract: Nanoscience has created a powerful set of methods in controlling materials at the nanoscale. My group has been exploring these new capabilities in designing nanomaterials for electrochemical processes, which could have a great impact on important energy technologies such as energy storage and electrocatalyst. Examples in this lecture include: 1) Nanomaterials design to enable next generation of battery chemistry with 10 times higher charge storage capacity. 2) Novel ideas to enhance battery safety through nanospike reversible thermal fuse and nanowire-polymer solid electrolyte. 3) Nanoscale, chemical potential and strain tuning of electrocatalyst for improved activity on water splitting.
